The California Loft is centerpiece of the main residence at 971 San Pascual.  It is a logical addition to the original Highland Park Bungalow in that it added a large family room / studio and kitchen while also providing another level of privacy to the property.  Its design is an exercise in minimalism that affords its inhabitants the space to live a creative lifestyle and entertain with privacy.  The expansive, sunlit kitchen and dining area seamlessly flow into the rear gardens.  The design and size of the kitchen provides the space needed to handle the bountiful harvests that the gardens provide each season.

The commercial grade kitchen has hosted numerous large gatherings and has accommodated dozens of film shoots.  The countertop of the kitchen is wrapped in 1¼ inch German stainless steel, dyed with acid and treated with linseed oil and is able to withstand dropped cast-iron pans without denting.  The closets and pantry were also considered in the final design to allow for maximum storage and weight capabilities.

A two-sided wood burning fireplace separates one of the bedrooms from the kitchen and adds drama to gatherings and family meals.  A loft overlooking the kitchen is provided access via a rolling steel ladder.

The studio bedroom with 14 foot ceilings opens to a private garden terrace and is insulated with a bio-climatic west wall.  All the walls have been insulated for both temperature and sound.  Overhead five Velux skylights run the length of the studio.

Off of the bedroom/studio are two additional rooms.  One is currently used as a nursery and the other is being finished to be a flexible workspace.  These two rooms can be incorporated into the California Loft and/or The Cloud or could be stand-alone work/studio spaces.
